Handwork embroidery is, in fact, centuries old and goes back to thousands of years! For centuries, embroidery has been used by people across the globe to beautify clothing and home goods. Embroidery can be made in any shapes, colors or even patterns and the best part of it is that everone can do it. A little creativity and imagination, you can pretty much build whatever your heart desires!
Handwork embroidery has a variety of styles, and everything that style defines unique and special. One example is cross-stitch, in which X-shaped stitches are used to form a picture or design. Another technique is crewel embroidery, in which soft wool threads are used to create raised stitches that protrude outward from the base fabric. Perhaps you may also like ribbon embroidery, which employs vibrant ribbons rather than thread to create stunning floral and various other attractive designs. Each style gives you something tangible so you can choose what tickles your fancy!
If you are a beginner with handwork embroidery, worry not! All you have to do is start doing it and you're sure to love it! You just need a fabric, needle and an embellished thread. Embroidery kits available at craft stores are a great way to start your journey as they include everything you need. They often come complete with patterns, printed fabric that already has your designs on it, and sometimes even coloured threads cut in the length you need to create your project.
Before you begin embroidery, for example, to do the embroidery you must first puncture a needle with thread as well as connected it and make a knot on the core of each line. Next, decide where you want to start your design on the fabric. Insert the needle from behind the fabric to the front, then take it back down from front to back. Continue doing so to form tiny stitches and fill in your lovely design. So keep in mind practice makes perfect do not be disheartened if it seems imperfect from the very first!
It is a fun and relaxing process or sometimes meditative as well. With each stitch, your design slowly comes to life, and it can be super gratifying to watch it grow. This gives you the freedom to play around with colors and different stitch patterns to achieve special looks. You can hand embroider or machine embroider. Most, however, feel that hand embroidery is more traditional and often delivers finer needlework which announces your effort with more grace.
The best thing about hand embroidery is you can create unique pieces that are heirloom quality. You can use it to embroider onto quilts, pillows, tablecloths and other such items that one can keep and pass on from generation to generations. Handwork embroideries can also be used to make some personalised gifts for your loved ones. Take a hand-embroidered baby blanket or even a monogrammed handkerchief – this would be that item, special yet incredibly practical and still well-loved each day for years to come!
