Silk thread is derived from cocoons created by small creatures known as silk worms. These worms make their cocoons from a special material called silk. The thread that comes from these cocoons is very fine and fragile, yet incredibly strong. That unique mix of lightness and strength is what makes silk thread special! One of the most amazing things about silk thread is its shine. The shininess looks very good when the thread is used in preparing clothing, jewelry and other lovely decorations that individuals enjoy wearing and covering.

The production process of silk thread

The first step, before you can make tajima, is to soak the silk worm cocoons in hot water. This process is intended to dissolve a sticky protein contained in the cocoon, called sericin, that holds everything in place. The workers soak the cocoons, then gently separate the threads inside and spin them into one long thread. It requires immense skill and patience as the threads are so fragile and can break very easily. When the threads are spun into silk thread, they are sorted by quality and appearance. Silk thread is the finest high quality silk which is used to create the most fancy and delicate textiles and apparel.
